1. End of an era
The end of an era was on its way in 1981 when the demolition of Old Town was given the go-ahead.
The Borough Engineer was authorised to demolish the inner ring of Pilot Street and South Street that year.

2. A huge attraction
HMS Warrior, the world’s first iron battleship which is being restored at Hartlepool’s Coal Dock, was due to open at Easter 1981. Officials were hoping to treble the 6,000 visitors who came a year earlier. Were you one of the people who went to see her during her restoration? Photo: hm
3. The start of a Hartlepool story
The movement for a Hartlepool hospice took shape in 1981. The chairman of the Steering Committee for a Hartlepool Hospice, Mrs Alice Bendle, said the meeting was to introduce the idea of a hospice and what it did to the public as well as to appeal for money and help. Photo: hm
4. A visit by HMS Otter
Royal Navy submarine HMS Otter was pictured passing the Banjo and Pilot piers as it headed out to sea. During its 6-day visit, the 300ft long submarine was berthed at the Central Dock and was open for people to take a look around. Photo: hm
