Durham Constabulary officers were called to the road just after 4pm following a crash between a blue Ford Focus and a red Mercedes C220, which had been travelling in opposite directions.
The woman driving the Ford suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, which was close to the junction of Webb Square.
The driver of the Mercedes was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving in the aftermath of the collision and remained in police custody over the weekend before he was charged and put before the court.

It took one patient to the James Cook University Hospital.
The road, which links Horden with Little Thorpe and the North East Industrial Estate in Peterlee, was closed for around eight hours while collision investigators worked at the scene to establish the circumstances of the tragedy.
Officers appealed for help to trace the driver of a black coloured Vauxhall type-van which, although not involved in the collision, was believed to be a key witness.
It has since been contacted by a driver, with inquiries continuing today.
