Two men arrested after lorries drive wrong way on A19 near Hartlepool

Two men are in custody after two lorries were spotted driving the wrong way along the busy A19.

Large queues of traffic built up while Cleveland Police dealt with the incident just south of the A689 Hartlepool junction, at Wolviston, on Sunday evening.

The vehicles were stopped and two men arrested with both now helping officers with their inquiries into two potential offences each.

A Cleveland Police spokesperson said on Monday: “On duty police officers saw two heavy goods vehicles travelling southbound on the northbound carriageway of the A19 last night about 9pm.

“The lorries were stopped and the two drivers, aged 43 and 58, were both arrested on suspicion of driving whilst over the alcohol limit and dangerous driving.

“Both remain in police custody this morning.”
