The 23-year-old impressed after moving to the Riverside in the second half of last season and still appears surplus to requirements at parent club Manchester City.
Boro boss Neil Warnock is a big fan of Roberts and wants to sign another creative player in the final few weeks of the transfer window.

Hide AdThe Teessiders are now primarily looking at players they can sign on loan from Premier League clubs, due to the financial uncertainty football is facing.
When asked about Roberts by the Mail on Thursday, Warnock said: “Patrick is the type of player that we’re looking at, that type of player.”
“The situation at the moment is there’s quite a few players and I think clubs are waiting to see what’s going to happen with that loan window, and we are no different to anybody else.
“We’ll be told after the fifth when the international window closes, I’m sure we’ll be given by agents and clubs the players that aren’t in their 25-man squads and then we look at what there is and hopefully we can bring one or two in.”

Hide AdIt’s since been reported by The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath that Boro are closing in on a move to re-sign Roberts.
McGrath tweeted on Friday: “Manchester City forward Patrick Roberts is set to sign for Middlesbrough today on a season-long loan following his short-term move to the Riverside last season.”
Roberts made 11 appearances for Boro last season.
