Snow warning for North East as temperatures continue to plummet ahead of New Year

Dean Martin could have been singing about the North East in his Christmas classic as over the coming days a cold-weather front is set to freeze our corner of the UK.
Wintry showers are also expected to persist over the coming days. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for snow across our region adding that you are more likely to see it fall the further you are inland.

Tonight:
Scattered wintry showers will become few and far between overnight and confined to coastal parts. Temperatures falling towards zero will allow frost and perhaps a few freezing fog patches to develop. Minimum temperature -2C.
Wednesday:
Staying cold, but generally dry inland. Overnight frost or freezing fog patches may be slow to clear, with isolated scattered showers again possible towards the coast. Maximum temperature 3C.
Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:
Staying cold into the New Year. Further wintry showers likely through to the weekend, with some accumulations likely inland. Overnight frost or freezing fog patches slowly clearing by day.

Hide AdLikely remaining cold throughout this period with the risk of wintry hazards. These showers often wintry with hill snow but with a chance of snow falling to lower-levels at times. Temperatures are likely to be below average bringing the risk of frost and freezing fog along with very cold overnight temperatures over any snow cover.
