Hartlepool United's squad evaluated and assessed:
![Most fans would like to see another new face in midfield. While Pools now look much more solid, robust and combative in the engine room, the only midfielder with natural creative flair is Anthony Mancini, who was limited to just 14 appearances and could still face an uncertain future. It would be a brave manager who stakes all his hopes on the Frenchman, no matter his obvious qualities, and it seems a shrewd move to provide cover and competition.](https://www.hartlepoolmail.co.uk/webimg/b25lY21zOjIwZjAzMTdkLTA1YmMtNDNhNi1hYjliLTY4NjMxYzE2ZjZlNDpkMjM0MDJlOC03YTI4LTQ0YTAtYTJiYS0yYzZlZWI2MmM1NDY=.jpg?crop=3:2&trim=&width=640)

![Keeping hold of the talismanic Dieseruvwe, who scored a career-best 25 goals in all competitions, becoming just the fourth Pools player to notch 20 league goals in a single season in the last 50 years, will be fundamental to the fortunes of Sarll's side. His impressive campaign, during which he was called up to the England C squad, means Pools are, understandably, bracing themselves for bids from a flurry of Football League sides but, if rumours are to be believed, the club have already demonstrated their resolve to keep their star man after turning down at least one offer in January. As well as his goals, he is a focal point, superb in the air, adept and bringing his teammates into the game, a nerveless penalty taker and a popular figure in the dressing room.](https://www.hartlepoolmail.co.uk/webimg/b25lY21zOjdlZjA0MTIyLWIwZGQtNDEzMC1hZTA5LTYxMzQzODczMmIwMjo3NTc3YjAxZC01YTE2LTQzNzMtOGI0YS01MzNjZjYzNTcyNmU=.jpg?crop=3:2&trim=&width=640)

![Coming off the back of the most prolific season of his career, during which he bagged 13 goals and formed an impressive partnership with Mani Dieseruvwe. A lot of his best work came from the right flank, where he was able to run in behind defences and take on his opposing full-back. Has amassed more than 100 Pools appearances despite being just 21 and it feels like he is beginning to realise his full potential. ![Signed on Monday and represents a real coup for Pools, having featured 48 times in a Crawley side who clinched an unlikely promotion to League One last term. Has impressive pedigree, having made his Premier League debut for Newcastle while still a teenager before going on to rack up more than 370 senior appearances, including a prolific spell at Gateshead. His pace should help Pools stretch defences and press from the front, which could make him instrumental to Sarll. The question will be how to get the best out of him; he could line up on the flank and be given the freedom to come inside, or he could operate as a second striker. In that regard, it could depend on what role Sarll plans for Anthony Mancini.](https://www.hartlepoolmail.co.uk/webimg/b25lY21zOmNhZDU1MjQ1LTEyYjItNGQ2Zi05YjNkLTY0MDIxOGZkYjkwZTo0MzNlY2QzNS0wOTA1LTQ1M2ItYTI2MS0wZTAwYTcwYTVhZDI=.jpg?crop=3:2&trim=&width=640)
